Kyrian Esser

Writer, actor, and theatre performer Kyrian Esser’s output ranges from playfully absurd to intimately secretive, often centring queer perspectives and never shying away from uncomfortable truths. Kyrian’s characters make art, history and meaning as they live rich, interconnected lives, whispering private confessions or collectively experiencing the depths of despair. Kyrian’s writing contains multitudes, approaching life from many angles. His award-winning short story Ontbinding tijd, plaats, handeling (2021), for example, blurs narrative lines as it shifts focus from character to character, jumping between moments from past to present, exploring a myriad of perspectives that doesn’t neatly form a single story but showcases the rich tapestry of human (mis)adventure. His 2023 debut novel Dans, Panfilo, dans is a swirling portrait of a budding love between two boys with nothing but art as their compass.
