Having studied in Utrecht and living in Rotterdam, Sanneke van Hassel knows the ins and outs of The Dutch City like no other. A prolific writer, she captures daily mundanities and fluently speaks the language of fundamental everyday truths. In Sanneke’s world, the tiniest whispers contain infinite multitudes of wonderful human complexity. She writes about mothers and sons, young couples finding their place, strange hobbies undertaken by ‘ordinary’ people in their spare time. She expands these microcosms to reveal the universe that lurks beneath the surface of the bustling metropole. Her most recent collection of short stories Milde Klachten (2024) tells Covid lockdown tales, evocatively capturing snapshots of life during the crisis. In 2020, Sanneke co-founded Fixdit, a Dutch writers’ collective promoting diversity in the literary world.
